Metal roof movement, edges and flashing
A rigid connection in the wrong place can fight the panel’s expected expansion and contraction. System-specific clips, joints and flashing allow the roof to manage that movement while directing water away from openings and edges.
Pipes, walls and valleys need particular care. Sealant has a role in specified joints, but it cannot substitute for a correctly formed and connected flashing detail. The roof’s geometry may also affect panel lengths, seams and the amount of cutting and fabrication.
Before installation, the substrate and underlayment need to suit the selected assembly. Changing from shingles to metal does not remove the need to address damaged decking or resolve an existing leak at a wall.
